Bryan Ellis’ thoughts on The Virtualization Of The Real Estate Industry

December 29th, 2008

A relatively new concept in the online world is “Virtual Real Estate Investing“. What is meant by “Virtual Real Estate Investing” ranges from online games like SecondLife (where real profit can be made) to the use of internet technologies to make normal real estate investors more profitable.

In order to figure out the truth of the matter, I sought out Bryan Ellis of BryanEllis.com, whose experience in the fledgling industry is truly impressive.

When I began using the term virtual real estate investing in the late 1990s, I did so because I saw clear parallels between the strategies used for profiting from physical real estate and those that would create income in the online world, said Ellis.

An example of the similar nature of “virtual” and “physical” real estate Bryan Ellis likes to point out is the methods of making a profit from domain names compared to physical real estate. “There’s a huge difference between a website and a piece of real estate, but the ways you can profit from them are similar: ‘flipping’, rental/leasing, advertising sales, etc…all of these apply to both markets” he states.

The parallels really are obvious. For example, if you’re the owner of a desirable property, its desirability is (in a business context) largely due to its being in a location that is of interest to others. Likewise, if you own a desirable domain name, others will find value in it because it serves their purposes. Regardless of the type of asset, you can sell or lease or use any number of strategies to turn the assets into cash.

In our next installment of this series on virtual real estate investing, Bryan Ellis will share the internet analogies to the physical concept of real estate development.

Keeping Passwords Secure

December 28th, 2008

As the web has evolved, so have the methods of collecting personal information. A large number of websites require visitors to register to gain access or participate. While the need for registration is understandable, tracking user names and passwords can be burdensome. Consider using software to store your passwords, in a safe accessible manner.

Most websites have privacy policies, but the value of privacy statements are only as honorable as the people behind the websites. Here are suggestions for keeping passwords and your information secure:

  1. change your password frequently

  2. never share your password with anyone

  3. try to choose a password so it doesn’t need to be written down, but not so obvious others would easily guess the password

  4. be sure your password is at least 6 characters

  5. don’t use a password containing all the same characters

  6. don’t send your password via email or provide it over the phone

  7. don’t use pet, family or friend names

  8. don’t use your telephone number, zip code or address

  9. use a different password for each account

  10. don’t use user name

  11. deactivate accounts for terminated employees

  12. don’t allow shared accounts

  13. password contains upper, lowercase letters, non-letter characters and numbers

Mont Blanc Increases in Bulk since 2003 According to Scientists

December 28th, 2008

Fresh precise Global Positioning System readings acquired on the 13-14th August have shown that Monte Bianco numbers 4810.2 m. Mount Blanc is layered by a deep ice cap which has augmented by 2.4 meters in not even 2 yrs furthermore more unexpectedly the bulk of the ice and snow has nearly doubled . At any rate that is as reported by the experts.

The volume of snow and ice was computed for the maiden time during 2002. It measured 14700 metres cubed above 4790 m. It amounted to just 13900 cubic meters in 2005 perchance ascribable to the high temperatures with +ve temp as high as 4850 m elevation. Yet the ice has virtually doubled up since then and at present equals 21000 metres cubed.

Chamonix’s respected local weather man Nathan Ames explained the increment in the mass of the ice is one of the contrary results of climate change: Snowfall has not accumulated generally in the Alps only with climate change we’re seeing a lot of hotter westerly winds which bestow rainfall lower down but in summer this translates to heavy snow that falls at higher altitude than 3800 meters elevation hence the amount of the ice-cap is expanding. Contrast this to the state of affairs in winter time when the snow crystals are very cold and are moved by the wind so do not settle down on the peak.

Chamonix Mont Blanc is not only well known for Mont-Blanc it is also a well renowned snowboarding resort and alpinism mecca with lot’s of ski deals and lodging bargains to be had.

A Hidden Camera for Your Home

December 26th, 2008

When you have small children and teenagers, a hidden camera or two about the house can be very useful. When children are small, it helps to ensure that they are protected from babysitters and nannies that might try to abuse them. As your children grow into teenagers, the hidden camera takes on a new mission: to make sure that they are obeying the rules, even when you are away from home.

Many sitters and nannies feel that it is okay to abuse children to get them to behave. Others simply ignore small children, taking your money but not really taking care of the children. Both of these scenarios are unacceptable. But how can you determine what goes on in your home while you are out? The simple solution is to have a hidden camera (or two or three) secreted about the house. Then you can see how the sitter treats your children. If it is bad, the hidden camera can serve as evidence if you wish to press charges or recover damages.
Other parents worry about leaving their teenagers home by themselves. Will they have parties? Get into the liquor cabinet? Again, a hidden camera can help you keep tabs on what your kids do when you leave home. If you let them know that you do have cameras in the house, but do not tell them where, it is likely that they will be on better behavior while you are gone.

And that is the beauty of the hidden camera. These devices are cleverly disguised as regular, normally functioning household items. Clocks, wall paintings, smoke detectors, and even can openers can all contain cameras while perfectly performing their regular functions. There are even clock radio alarms that will still wake you up (and that you can hit snooze on) and still record what is going on in the room. Additionally, there are plenty of listening devices that can also be disguised as regular items, and that can supplement the visuals you receive from the cameras. You can know exactly what is going on in your home when you have a hidden camera.

Screenplay Structure - Part 9 and 10 (of 17)

December 25th, 2008

The hero’s journey is the screenwriting template. Screenwriters can use it to write effective screenplays. Below are a few of the elements of each stage of the journey.

Atonement with the Father.

Confrontation. That which is the greatest barrier to the apotheosis is confronted. In Alien (1979), Ripley confronts Ash. In Casablanca (1942), Rick has a confrontation with both Ilsa and Victor.

Internalise the Father. In The Shawshank Redemption (1994), Andy walks out wearing the warden’s shoes.

Apotheosis. Every hero has a seminal insight, an illumination - the apotheosis.

In The Shawshank Redemption (1994), Andy Dufresne’s apotheosis is that you either get busy living or you get busy dying. He reaches that insight in the scene by the prison wall with Red (Morgan Freeman).

In Scarface (1983), Tony Montana’s insight is that the rewards of the path he’s chosen are not worth the spiritual price he is paying, expressed with the words (in the restaurant scene): “is this it? Is that what it’s all about Manny? Eating, drinking, fucking, sucking,” “no free rides in this world kid,” “I lost my appetite,” “is that what I worked for? With these hands? Is that what I killed for? For this?”

In Raging Bull (1980), Jake discovers that Vickie has been sleeping with everyone, including his brother.

Writing Articles: What Gives You the Right to Write?

December 25th, 2008

One of the biggest limitations I see in people that are holding themselves back from writing is the notion that somehow they do not have “the right to write.”

3 common right to write limitations

1. My writing is not perfect

I see this one all the time.

Here is what you need to remember - while you do need to use correct grammar and punctuation and follow editorial guidelines, you are not writing The Great American Novel nor are you writing for a medical journal.

Just write what you know.

2. My life is not perfect

So you believe your life has to be perfect and you have to have it all together in order to write?

Why?

Actually, quite the opposite it true. People that appear perfect put other people off. People that struggle and can share those struggles with others are very compelling folks.

3. No one will want to read my stuff

How do you know? Is your new name Clair Voyant?

You won’t know, until you get it out there. In the words of hockey great Wayne Gretsky:

“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”

Here is the bottom line, and if you don’t get anything else out of this article, get this:

If you have information inside you that can help someone else, not only do you have the right to write, you have an obligation to write.

Put Your Faith Where Your Mouth Is

December 24th, 2008

I believe strongly that prayer and scripture are two of the most powerful tools for the Christian. Much of my writing centers around these. But there are many times that I can identify with the father who brought his son to Jesus in Mark 9:14-24. “I believe, but help my unbelief.”

How many of us read the Bible’s precious promises and pray over troublesome situations, just to have the fear and worry return as soon as we’re done? How much are we actually trusting God? It is difficult to let go of the problem. We want to take it back and try to fix it ourselves.

Here are a few suggestions that I’m working on. Maybe you will find them helpful, also.

1. Confess your fear and lack of faith to God.

Our pastor always says that confession is the beginning of healing. Simply tell God that you are struggling in this area. Tell him that you have the head knowledge, but you need the assurance in your heart. He knows our thoughts anyway. We might as well talk it out with him.

2. Counteract fear with positive affirmations.

When the worry starts to creep back in, don’t just lie down and take it. Fight back. Say to yourself - even out loud - “I’ve given this problem to God. He is able and willing to take care of it. He is already working on the answer, even if I can’t see it yet. It he can create the universe, and raise Jesus from the dead, this is easy for him!”

Then start thanking him for loving you, for caring, for his power and wisdom. Thank him for the answer. Start picturing the prayer being answered in your mind.

3. Think of all the times God has answered prayer and has solved your problems.

This is where it is helpful to have a prayer notebook or journal. Jot down prayer needs and requests and date them. As time goes by, you can look back over your notebook and witness God’s mighty power in your life. When you see how he has brought you through something, it gives you more faith for the next time.

4. Realize that this is a growing process.

Don’t get too down on yourself if you are weak in the faith area. Don’t spend energy on self-condemnation. None of us have arrived spiritually. We are all growing up in Christ at different rates of speed. The important thing is that we are growing. Hopefully, you have more faith than you did a year ago. If not, pray for it. The Lord wants to give it to you.

Isaiah 26:3 says that God will keep us in perfect peace if our mind is stayed on him, because we trust him. Ask God to give you the ability to keep your mind anchored and focused on him instead of the problem. Then you’ll start to experience his perfect peace that passes all understanding.

Analyzing Your Audience and Assessing Comprehension Through Feedback

December 23rd, 2008

Aside from fielding and asking questions, there are other ways of analyzing audience attention and feedback. Unfortunately most trainers are unaware of these methods or feel audience analysis is not really all that effective or important. Nothing could be further from the truth. Analysis is the main tool for what is known as the “functional approach” this dictates that you always seek to measure your progress toward an objective as well as the accomplishment itself. Without the ability to analyze feedback, trainers may have unrealistic or false impressions about the progress being made in the presentation, and thus will be uncertain or wrong in determining their success.

Ask “friendly” questions by putting the “you” element into the question. This lets the audience know that you are on their side and genuinely are interested in their response. In order to emphasize this fact, some trainers develop the fine art of leaning forward slightly or cocking their head. As you allow the trainee to answer, limit the answer to the information wanted but give the trainee time to think and phrase the answer. Be objective in evaluation and give the trainee credit for intelligence. From your knowledge of the experience level of the audience, be sure that the trainee can answer the question, but always supply an “out” in case you’ve chosen the wrong person to avoid the possibility of embarrassment or ridicule.

daddy

December 23rd, 2008

Any man can father a child For it takes but a short while But to be a daddy takes much more Especially to love a child that’s not yours A child that here without a notion Of what has happened and why’s there commotion A child that’s here not from your seed But yet and still you took no heed To raise me up as one of your own Making your heart my place of home Now there were times I wanted to know Why the biological never showed But I got much love and that’d be all I’d need Because the actions you took made me your seed For you stepped in and took control Unlike him you were bold For he stepped in and right back out In my mind leaving wonder and doubt Why would someone show no tact? For an innocent child felt the impact But true love I have never lacked Now the time for proclamation I find myself in a similar situation It hurt me much the way he came But none-the-less I’ll love him the same I hope to be at least half of you To love that child and render him due All that I’ve truly been given For he is a precious gift from heaven Eligha Thompson before I go There is something you must know You are my daddy and I’ll always love you so Copyright2008 by Kenneth J Thompson
