Europe Okays Internet Laws in Telecoms Package

The Telecoms Package, which provides for more freedom of unsupervised internet usage, has been accepted by the European Union. The vote on the bill was conducted wherein members of the European parliament showed their favour for the bill in an overwhelming majority.

The telecom laws in force at present will be hugely impacted by the revisions proposed by the package. In the UK, this will have significant impact even as the broadband industry is undergoing some major upheavals. On one side, the government is going forth with its super speed broadband programme, and on the other, the uncertain political climate is making investors hesitate to pump in more funds into the sector.

The anti-piracy law that has already faced a huge number of protests is also likely to be greatly affected by the Telecom Package. This is because the package views internet freedom as a fundamental right, while the anti-piracy law has drawn flak for the invasion of privacy its monitoring methods will entail.

The provision under this law for the disconnection of user accounts of persistent offenders has been its most disliked feature so far, with protestors calling it a disproportionately excessive punishment. The EU acceptance of the Telecom Package by 510 votes to 40, proposing high levels internet freedom, also seems to lend the protest its support. However, critics have their own doubts about the efficacy of the package as a compromise tool.

In addition, the Telecoms Package calls for coordinating mobile broadband across the EU and also outlines proposals which will lend impetus to the high speed broadband plan. The digital divide will be reduced by making broadband more easily available across providers and by making it less expensive so that even middle-income groups can have satisfactory broadband connection.
