That First Mistake
Monday, August 31st, 2009Beginning players always tend to have one crucial mistake that they make when they’re first beginning to play online poker. You hear it time and time again, “I just had to see it.” They’re talking about someone eles’s bet when they think they have a beat casino hand but they still just want to see if they can maybe have a better hand. It’s like AQ calling AK when AK is on the board and they read AK, they knew their opponent had AK, but they still called just to see. This has to stop. It’s one of the worst strategy leaks that plague the ministakes. And it loses you a lot of money. Sure if you’re pot committed and you have +EV to make the call, then that’s a different story, but if you’re in a small pot and you get pushed all in, and have such bad odds to call with a worse online poker hand, why would you do it? So the next time you start asking yourself, well, maybe I have it, and then you get that sensation of thinking, ” I just have to see.” Do yourself a favor. Go into the tank and start thinking it through, and learn to fold that second best hand. Begin to do this consistently and viola, you’ve just plugged leak number one
