Stopping Locust Plague With Truck Mounted Acoustic Weapons

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Is it possible to stop a locust plague with an acoustic weapon or sound device mounted in a giant semi-truck? How could this be done? One recent member of an online think tank, thinking ahead of spring and summer when locusts maybe likely to swarm thinks this may all be possible. The think tanker states:

“This is a job for a sound engineering corporation like http://www.bose.com.

Indeed the idea of stopping a locust swarm with a giant sound weapon is a job for those who study sound. I agree and I had met an interesting group from the DARPA Challenge, which had made a “Stereo Concept Sensor” for directional sound waves. The trick it to get the sound everywhere and yes you would need some cutting edge acoustical engineers to figure it out. I very much enjoyed reading the Bose website. Very excellent stuff indeed. I concur very much that this is a job for a group like this.

The think tanker further states; “There is another company that has a directional sound generator (really can’t call it a speaker) that delivers sound to a very specific location”

Yes, I had correspondence with an MIT genius working on this stuff. Great stuff indeed. Directional sound technologies are the answer I believe to focusing on the locusts. Maybe we could mount the thing in an old work horse like a C-130 and fly over it with an acoustical directional array and simply fly around the swarm and cut it down with sound waves like they do with the “AC-130 Gun Ship” the array would stay focused on the target while the aircraft flew.

Of course a large blimp might be better as the speed of flight is less. Only problem is getting it there in time to catch up with the locusts. A redesigned blimp which had a TAS of lets say 130 Kts due to its shape could fly there and then land and load the array and then “plump” up to hold the weight of the Sound Technology Device and then go get the locusts. A War on Locust Plagues, rather than warring against mankind’s own. United in a common cause to stop the locust swarms which devastate the land could indeed be a wonderful plan. Imagine this in 2006.

What’s The Best Product To Sell Online?

Monday, August 25th, 2008

I wish I had a dime for every time I’ve been asked, “Tim, what’s the best product to sell online?” I also wish I had a nickel for every blank stare I received when I answered: “That’s simple: information.” I’d have enough money to finance another startup or two.

As more and more entrepreneurs move to the Internet seeking their fortunes, “What’s the best product to sell online,” has become the number one business question of the decade.

The next question is always: “Why information?” Again, the answer is simple: because no other type of product is easier to create, faster to bring to market, easier to distribute, and potentially more profitable.

Many info products net as much as 75% to 95% profit on the initial sale after all costs have been deducted. And residual sales to established customers can offer 100% profit.

Informational products come in many forms. An info product can be a digital book (e-book” is the accepted term), a digital report or white paper, a piece of software, a website, a newsletter, etc. Any product that is informational or informative in nature can be considered an info product.

Here’s why information is the best product to sell online:

Fast to create, fast to market

Forget a product development cycle that is years in the making. Forget an intense design and costly manufacturing process. I have literally created info products in as little as two hours and had them generating revenue shortly thereafter. If you have an appealing topic and a computer, you have all the tools you need to create an info product.

No inventory to stock

Forget filling your garage with boxes of cheap watches and cases of mega vitamins that you will never sell. When you sell information there is no inventory to stock. Your product is digital (I like to call it electronic air) and requires no space in your garage, just a little space on your computer. One of my most successful info products is a 30kb e-book that requires almost no space at all.

Low startup costs

When you sell information you can literally create a product for next to nothing. If your product is an e-book the only investment required will be in the time it takes to put words to digital paper. If you become an affiliate marketer of someone else’s info product your investment can be zero.

You can automate the sales and delivery process.

Thanks to internet technology you can sell info products 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and never lift a finger. In fact, you don’t even have to be awake or at home to make money with an info product. I know many successful info entrepreneurs who are getting rich despite the fact that they work as little as an hour a day.

They check the website and their email, then go play golf or hang with the kids for the rest of the day. You can completely automate the sales and delivery process so your website does everything for you.

An automated website can give a potential customer your sales pitch, take the order and process the payment, deliver the product by email, and even follow up in a few days to make sure the customer is satisfied and offer to sell them additional products.

You can offer immediate access or delivery

Online consumers are an inpatient lot. They want things NOW! These are people who stand in front of the microwave impatiently tapping their foot and frowning at their watch. Selling information is the best way to give your customers immediate satisfaction. As mentioned earlier, an automated website can process the order and payment, then immediately email the download link for the product to your customer.

There’s no shipping and handling

One of the things I never liked about selling hard goods was the manual process of taking the order, running the credit card, placing the order with a dropshipper or filling the order of my stock. I hated finding a box and packing peanuts and printing the label and taping it all up and lugging it to the post office. Every minute I spent filling orders was time that I was not being compensated for, therefore, my profit grew less and less with every minute spent on shipping and handling. Informational products require no shipping and handling. Most are delivered by email. In the time it takes you to click your mouse, you can deliver an info product.

What if you don’t have your own info product to sell?

This is one of the most appealing aspects of selling information. If you don’t have an info product, creating or finding one is much easier than you think.

We’ll discuss that process in detail in the next article.

Goal Setting and Interviewing

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

Before you go on an interview process or even start your own business, you must set goals! As a corporation owner for over twenty years, this is how I went about setting goals for myself. They are as follows:

GOAL SETTING’S TOP TEN:

If you want to be successful, it is important to set goals for yourselfdaily goals, weekly goals, monthly goals and yearly goals. Achieving a goal is not difficult, however setting a goal can be. Don’t leave your business to chance. SET GOALS!

RULE NUMBER ONE: Make a list. What is important to you? What have your only dreamt about doing? For example, if you thought you might like to write a book, write this down. We have all heard the saying, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” The first step to achieving a goal is to write it down!

RULE NUMBER TWO: Put the “horse” before the “cart.” First, you need to “see” an image in your mind about what your future goals are. Then decide what you will have to do on a daily basis to get there and then, see yourself there. Act as if you have already achieved your goals.

RULE NUMBER THREE: “We become what we think about” said Earl Nightengale.
Begin to walk, talk, and act like the success you deserve to be.

RULE NUMBER FOUR: Write 6 things down you want to accomplish. You should be able to achieve at least 4 of these if you plan on a daily basis and look at this list.

RULE NUMBER FIVE: Make a BrainMap. Put this on your desk, next to your appointment book. Look at it daily. Cut out pictures, put in quotes, and make yourself a “map” of where you going. When we have a map, we get where we want to go.

RULE NUMBER SIX: Ask “how” and “when” questions. How will you achieve your goals? When will they be achieved?

RULE NUMBER SEVEN: One step at a time. Know your objective and once you see yourself achieving one project, you will quickly be able to go on to another.

RULE NUMBER EIGHT: Read about OPS (Other People’s Successes). This can be very powerful. In the publication, INVESTORS BUSINESS DAILY, there is a LEADERS AND SUCCESS section in almost every issue. Read Oprah’s Magazine.
Read motivational books. Remember, “oday a Reader, Tommorrow a Leader.”

RULE NUMBER NINE: Make positive friends and acquaintances. People need positive support when they are trying to achieve. If you have negativity in your life, move over to the positive side. It is powerful.

RULE NUMBER TEN: Believe in Yourself. It is so important to know that what you are wanting to do is something you deserve. You deserve to be successful. Make your goals reflect what “you” want, and not what someone else wants.

If you are experiencing the need to go out on interviews, the following pointers will help you get the job you are seeking.

1) RESEARCH THE EMPLOYER

The first part of any interview process is research. The idea is to learn as much as possible about
the organization, its philosophies, goals and future plans. You are showing them that you took the time to research their company, you are showing them how you go that extra mile.

2. REREAD/REDO RESUME

Make sure you’re familiar with contents. It will be the employers basis of asking questions. Know your strong points. Be able to tell them (indirectly) why they should hire you.

3) DRESS FOR SUCCESS

Always look the part of the position you want. Be meticulously groomed and bring properly organized work with you (letters of recommendation, resume copies, performance evaluations, list of questions).

4) BE ON TIME

There is no excuse for being late. There was too much traffic, a car accident, family emergency…just doesn’t cut it. Find out where this is and make a trial run. Where is the parking?
Be prepared to be on time. Keep a note of the person you will be talking with. Review questions
you plan to ask. Bring your notebook, black pen, tissues, business card, personal data, letters of recommendation, money for gas, telephone, and parking, social security card, drivers. license identification

5) BE POLITE, SHAKE HANDS, BE POSITIVE

Always stand to shake hands, use eye-contact, and smile. It sets the tone.

6) SCHEDULE STRATEGICALLY

Try not to be the first person being interviewed. Research conducted by Robert Half and Associates indicates that the first person interviewed gets the job only 17% of the time, while the last person gets the job 55% of the time. Late in the afternoon is best.

7) SET GOALS BEFORE THE INTERVIEW

It is your responsibility to leaving the interview feeling secure that the interviewer knows as much as he/she knows about your skills, abilities, experience and achievements. If you sense that there are misconceptions, clear them up. If the interviewer does not ask you important questions, diplomatically bring them up and answer them. Don’t leave the meeting without getting your own
questions answered so that you have a clear idea of what you would be getting yourself into.

DURING THE INTERVIEW- WHAT AND HOW

What do you want to communicate and how do you plan your plan?

1) USE RELAXED CONCENTRATION

Enter into a state of relaxed conversation. Be able to clear your head and concentrate on the present moment of this interview. You will want to act spontaneous but be prepared. Rely on the research you have done before this interview to put you at ease. Listen Carefully. It’s okay to ask politely for clarification. Always pause before answering to consider all facts that may help you in your response. Be positive. Communicate attitudes - You are willing to work. You expect to make a contribution. You are flexible. You are committed to continuous learning.

2). KNOW THE QUESTION BEHIND THE QUESTION

Every question comes to “Why should we hire you?” Be sure you are prepared to answer this.
If there is, for example, a question about meeting deadlines, consider whether the interviewer is trying to learn about your personal life. He/she may really be wanting to know if your family life will interfere with your employment.

3) WATCH FOR NONVERBAL CUES

Watch for facial expressions, body movements and actions during the interview process.
Walk and sit confidently. Lean toward the interviewer to show interest and enthusiasm.
Make and keep eye contact. Speak clearly and with personality.

4) FINISH STRONG

Demonstrate interest by asking when the position will be filled. Summarize why you are qualified. This is a time to say what you left out during the interview, tell them if you want this job and ask what the next step might be in the hiring process. Will there be additional interviews? When will be hiring decision be made? When can you call back for the decision?

5) FOLLOW-UP

Evaluate the interview. Record your follow-up plans. Write the date and time for your next
contact with the employer and follow-through. Write a thank you note within 24 hours and send one to each person you interviewed with. To write a thank you note or letter, just
find some things you discussed and expand upon them. You will stand out above others.

JOB QUESTIONS THEY MAY ASK YOU…………

Tell me about yourself.
Why do you believe you could handle this position?
Since you are overqualified for this position, what do you hope to gain from it?
What are you reading lately? Or What types of publications do you read?

What is the minimum salary you will accept?
What is your salary history?

Do you see a future here?
Are you considering other positions?
What is your leadership style? (If you know this, it will impress them).
How do you feel about relocating?
How do you work under pressure? Deadlines?

QUESTIONS YOU CAN ASK THEM………………….

What is the size, sales volume, earnings?
Does the company plan to expand?
What are significant trends in this industry?
How does the organization rank within their field?

What qualifications are you looking for in the person who fills this job?
What types of projects will I be responsible for?
How much travel is involved?
Is there a reason this position is not being filled from within?
What has been the greatest challenge of this department/company?

ALL INTERVIEW QUESTIONS ARE REALLY THE SAME QUESTION:

WHY ARE YOU THE BEST PERSON FOR THE JOB?.

Low Cost Laptops for Gaming Possibly on the Horizon

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Do you remember when gaming portables were a niche product? They were simply like a small qty manufacturing line. Did not ship in numbers but made a lot of money on each laptop. They were the kind of laptop everyone wished for but the one they just couldn’t't purchase. They were just the best laptop computers that the technology was able to provide at that time. They would create tons of excitement but I do not believe many people would go out and buy laptop computers at steep prices. Lately all that has seemed to have altered as the massive manufacturers have found the opportunities in laptops for gaming.

Just imagine how much cash these big brands would be generating particularly when applying mass production. With notebook computers being perceived like consumer electronics this is a good profit stream for them. Convincing prospects to buy laptop computers is kinda effortless for global companies. In my view this would seriously ruin smaller retailers if they do not separate themselves. This once exclusive technology is basically going to be targeted at everyone now. Customers just feel a lot more at ease making a giant purchase from a familiar name.

I reckon its a joke that as it comes with a brand name they are automatically perceived as the best laptop computers. This certainly will provide some encouragement to the smaller competitors. I seriously doubt consumers will like to have the same spec like everybody in this kind of niche. Such consumers are typically tech savvy and can check all the fine details. Consumers like these are at times more worried about the functional capabilities of a machine than they are in it’s styling. All the changes are really favourable from the consumer’s standpoint. In the end, the prices will be brought down even greater making premium technology to be a choice that we will all be able to buy. Though I say that, I am not so certain of my predictions. Prices will be kept high as an outcome of the constant creation of new notebooks. The bigger companies have already launched their own gaming notebook range, so all we can do now is sit back and see.

Foods To Avoid That Cause Bad Breath

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

Did you know that there are specific foods that may lead to bad breath? This is because of volatile sulfur compounds - the culprit in causing bad breath!

For example, if food sits out too long it will spoil. That spoiling action is due to anaerobic bacteria breaking down proteins in that particular food. In milk, the odor of sour milk is caused by relatives of the bugs that create bad breath when they break down proteins in the milk (and basically in all dairy foods). A reaction takes place where ‘the bad breath bugs’ extract sulfur compounds from the amino acids in these proteins. Specifically, the amino acid Cysteine is converted to Hydrogen Sulfide (which has a rotten egg smell) and Methionine becomes Methyl Mercaptan (which smells like a cross between old socks and garlic). The same analogy applies to meat if it sits out too long.

Everyone knows that onions and garlic will create bad breath. But do you know why? It’s because the odorous molecules in onions and garlic are actually sulfur compounds themselves called Mercaptans. Sulfur is nature’s way of creating odors. You’re all familiar with the skunk. Its odor is created by a defense and/or attack mechanism. Skunk odor is made up of skatoles, which are naturally occurring sulfur compounds. In a similar fashion, bacteria in your mouth creates the volatile sulfur compounds of bad breath and taste disorders.

There are 4 food categories that will result in an increase of sulfur production because these categories have a stimulating affect on the bacteria that cause bad breath:

1. Drying Agents

2. Dense Protein Foods

3. Sugars

4. Acidic Foods

Let’s look closely at each of these food categories and how they stimulate bad breath!

DRYING AGENTS

The most common drying agent in food is alcohol. Alcohol of course, is the basis of all “adult” beverages such as beer, wine, and hard liquor. It is also used, unfortunately, in many mouthwashes you find in the grocery stores, which only makes a bad breath problem worse.

Alcohol, known chemically as a desiccant, is used quite often in laboratories to “dry out” hard to reach areas in test tubes and beakers. The same end result takes place in the oral cavity.

Although cigarettes are not really food, smoking is probably the quickest way to dry out your mouth, with alcohol being the second. If you smoke, you are bound to have bad breath!

DENSE PROTEIN FOODS

Dairy foods are notorious for creating bad breath. An article that appeared in the “Los Angeles Times” once noted that over 50% of the population in Southern California was “lactose intolerant”. With regards to bad breath, many of these people (numbering in the tens of millions) end up with more dense proteins available as bad breath fuel for the bacteria than those who have no problem with dairy foods like milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, etc. The end result is a buildup of amino acids, which are easily converted into volatile sulfur compounds by the anaerobic bacteria found within the surface of your tongue and throat.

To a lesser extent, people have the same problem with other types of food that are considered to be dense in protein such as beef, chicken, and fish.

Another problem, thankfully rare, has to do with people who have an inability to break down certain proteins found in beans. This condition is called TMA (Trimethylaminuria) and is sometimes known as the “Fish Odor Syndrome,” because the odor produced is similar to decaying fish. The odor consists of sulfur compounds, plus nitrogen compounds (amines). People with this condition must abstain from beans and other types of food that are dense in protein.

SUGARS

Wouldn’t it be great if we could get rid of bad breath by chewing on M&Ms? Or what if the cure for bad breath were Hershey Kisses?

That’s what the makers of Altoids would have you believe. Altoids, and other products of the same ilk, are trying to fool the public into believing that a strong “good” taste in your mouth is equivalent to the “freshness” of your breath. This is so anti-scientific it’s absurd! If you think about it for a minute, it really doesn’t make any sense.

By using concentrated mint flavorings, your taste buds pick up mint as a taste. However, Altoids contains two types of sugar which again, are a fuel for the bacteria to reproduce and create more sulfur compounds - thus bad breath. In addition, the frightening part is that other bacteria can take the sugars and produce glycan strands, which in turn end up causing thick layers of plaque on the enamel of your teeth and around your gums. This leads to tooth decay and gum disease - and you guessed it - worse breath than you started with!

Since you can’t smell your own breath, you just go merrily along with that great strong mint taste in your mouth, while others close to you are backing away - backing away from your increased bad breath, decayed teeth, and gross, swollen, bleeding gums!

Stay away from candies, mints, and chewing gum if they contain sugar! Instead, let me recommend an alternative created by TheraBreath called the TheraBreath Oxygenating Chewing Gum (http://www.therabreath.com/products.asp?CAT=5). It releases Oxygen molecules directly into your mouth and also contains the antibacterial agent, Zinc Gluconate. This agent is found in many cold medications. In addition it contains Xylitol, which is a natural sweetening agent with an anti-decay compound.

ACIDIC FOODS

Foods with a high acidic content are a problem as well. pH is a term used to describe the acidity of an environment. The oral cavity has a normal pH of 6.5 (7 is considered neutral). Some of the foods you should watch out for are coffee and many citrus juices. Both decaffeinated and regular coffee contain acids. However, tea is okay. Among the citrus juices the ones with the highest acidic content include tomato juice, orange juice, pineapple juice, and grapefruit juice.

We know that acids make the bacteria reproduce much faster. In order to decrease the production of odorous sulfur compounds, the acid environment needs to be neutralized.

What can you learn from all this? Avoiding foods that contribute to, if not cause, bad breath is vital if you want to have clean fresh breath. While this is a difficult task, being aware of these bad breath causing elements is the first step in developing confidence in your breath. In addition, it is important to use oral care products that are free of alcohol, sugar, and that also have a high pH level.

These paintings are then printed onto canvas, presenting just as if you had commissioned an artist to paint a still life of your pet but at a fraction of the price.(Don’t tell and who would know?)They really do look that good.

Driving On the Wrong Side of the Road

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

On which side of the road do you drive? Depends if you’re a Brit or an American.

If we go back far enough, some two thousand years ago, to the time when the Romans occupied Britain, we’ll find a clue about driving habits back then. Archaeologists have unearthed a well-preserved track leading to a Roman quarry near Swindon, England. The ruts in the road on one side are much deeper than those on the other side, as would be the case if their carts were going IN empty and coming OUT with heavy materials such as stones. The ruts suggest that, at least in Swindon, the Romans drove on the left.

In fact, some believe that ancient travelers on horseback rode, for the most part, on the left side. Why? Because since most people are right-handed, horsemen would be able to hold their reins with their left hand and keep their right hand free - to offer in friendly greeting to a passing rider or to defend themselves with a sword if that need arose.

A Change to the Right

In the late 1700’s, a shift from left to right occurred in the United States, when teamsters started using large cargo wagons pulled by several pairs of horses. Since these wagons had no driver’s seat, the driver sat on the left rear horse holding his whip with his right hand. Seated on the left, the driver naturally preferred that other wagons pass him on the left so that he could be sure to keep clear of the wheels of any oncoming traffic. That was accomplished by driving on the right side.

The English, however, kept to the standard of left side driving. They had smaller wagons and the driver sat on the wagon, not on the horses as in the States, usually on the right side of the front seat. From there he could easily use his long whip in his right hand without entangling it in any cargo packed behind him. In that position, on the right side of the wagon, the driver could judge the safety margin of passing traffic by keeping to the left side.

Countries that became part of the British Empire adopted the keep-left rule too, although there were some exceptions such as Canada which eventually changed from left to right to accommodate easier facilitation of border crossings to and from the United States.

Political events in France had a large effect on citizens’ driving habits. Before the Revolution of 1789, the aristocracy drove their carriages along the left side of the roads, forcing the peasants to move to the opposite side. But once the Revolution started, these nobles desperately tried to hide their identity by walking (or occasionally riding) on the right side like other peasants.

By 1794 the French government had introduced a keep-right rule in Paris, which later spread to other regions Napoleon I conquered throughout much of continental Europe. It’s no wonder Napoleon favored keep-right driving, as he was left-handed and his armies had to march on the right so he could keep his sword arm between him and any who dared approach him aggressively.

In Europe, countries that resisted Napoleon kept to the left and eventually Russia and Portugal made the switch from left to the right early in the 20th century. Austria and Czechoslovakia changed also when occupied by Nazi Germany at the end of the 1930’s, and Hungary followed suit. Today just four European countries still drive on the left side including Britain, Ireland, Cyprus and Malta. Japan also drives on the left, though never considered a British colony.
