Tips and Advice for Hosting an Unforgettable Christmas Party

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

It’s just about that time of the year again! Each year, around this time, people start to get into the festive spirit and decide to celebrate with a party of some sort. I host a party for my friends and family every year, and each year I learn something new. In my experience, there are a few things you can do to make the party enjoyable for everyone…yourself included.

Plan your party well in advance. The holidays are a busy time for everyone, so give your guest as much advance notice as possible. Your best bet is to send out the invitations in late November, so your guests can have the time to plan ahead. Organization is the key to a successful party.

It is important to have some idea how many people will be attending your party. You could include a stamped envelop with the invite, so your guests can RSVP. If you are unable to confirm the number of attendees, save yourself some trouble and plan to have a few more people than you invited. By approaching the party this way, you will be sure to have enough food and drink for everyone.

When considering your menu, try to keep things as simple as possible. This does not mean you have to compromise the quality of your food. Experience has taught me that homemade desserts are always a big hit. Consider serving an array of tarts and pastries, along with tea and coffee. As for the other food, try to serve finger foods such as sandwiches or wraps. You can purchase a platter of these at a very reasonable price, and save yourself a lot of time. I also like to have to an assortment of appetizers such as breaded shrimp and spring rolls.

Regarding beverages, you should consider having a selection of things to choose from. Be sure to stock up on Egg Nog! You should have a reasonably well stocked bar that includes red and white wine, rum, whiskey, vodka, and beer. We love Irish Cream with our coffee! Keep in mind that not everyone likes to imbibe, so be sure to have an assortment of soda and juice on hand. Tea and coffee are absolute necessities.

Another thing you could do to make the party more exciting, is to base it around a theme of some sort. You can tailor your food and drink to the theme, as well. Wouldn’t it be great if everyone showed up dressed in costume? We had a party a few years ago, and it was in the theme of a Victorian Christmas. It was so much fun seeing everyone together and enjoying the holidays dressed in wonderful evening gowns and tuxedos! So good luck, and have a wonderful holiday!

Christmas Trivia - 3 Insights About 3 Popular Christmas Symbols!

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

We all love Christmas symbols used as decorations however most people have no idea where they originally came from. It certainly adds to delightful Christmas conversations when more meaning is added.

Christmas bells - Traditionally bells are rung to celebrate the birth of Christ on Christmas morning. In olden times bells were assumed to chase away evil spirits said to be repelled by the noise. Bells represent the death of ignorance and the birth of enlightenment. In modern times Father Christmas uses jingling bells accompanying his sleigh progress to announce the birth of new beginnings and to remind us that goodness is within the hearts of all!

Candy cane - They originated in the 17th century. A Choirmaster in Germany suggested that a local craftsman make candy in the shape of shepherd’s crooks. The idea was to pass them out to children during ceremonies at the nativity scene to keep them quiet! The design was kept in tune with the festivities - white with red strips. Red symbolizing new life, white for purity and the three strips representing the three Gods, The Father, The Son (Jesus Christ) and The Holy Ghost.

Christmas Stockings - Legend says that a nobleman foolishly squandered his entire fortune after the death of his wife leaving 3 young daughters without dowries. This meant a life of spinsterhood not favored in these times. The shy but generous St Nicholas (today most commonly known as Santa Claus) heard of the girls plight and came to their aide. Wanting to stay anonymous, St Nicholas rode his horse by their house and threw 3 small bags of gold coins into the chimney which were fortuitously captured by the young women’s stockings hung by the fireplace to dry. Hence the hanging of stockings became hugely popular in the hope of a great surprise.

Extra! Extra! Knowledge Is The Ultimate Power Online…

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Everyone is asking the ultimate question, how do I get to have a successful website in this highly competitive age? The answer is simple…

In order to learn how to do it properly, we need to take a look at others who are already doing it, and winning the never ending game of promotion.

Never ending is a bit of an understatement if you consider the vast opportunity you have presented to you through promoting your business online. Millions and millions of people log on every day, but what you don’t consider is that millions more have yet to log on for the very 1st time. If you’ve ever questioned the fact about whether or not there is an opportunity for yourself online, this small but powerful paragraph should end that doubt.

To make it big online, you have to think big. The internet is no different than real life… what you put forth, so shall you receive. There isn’t any greater statement than that.

So what does it really take to make it big?

Create something bigger than yourself! Bottom line. Creating something bigger could be accomplished in a few different ways. I know there are some of you who are thinking, I don’t have the money to create a massive website! Who ever said you’re “something big” has to be owned by you?

For instance Authors a.k.a Writers / a.k.a Bloggers / a.k.a Columnists are taking the internet by storm and for a good reason… This type of promotion REALLY works.
With the vast amount of websites out there that accept articles, you’re practically guaranteed to create a resourceful website of your own. You don’t need to be the best web designer in the world to figure out how to buy a domain name, create a blog or two (that is programmed by someone else) and link to your articles that way. You can even talk about your products and services within your blog, you have every right.

Go to http://www.blogger.com to create a blog.

That is the easiest way in. Let’s also take a look at why you should have a website and promote it through your knowledge, we can only do this by taking a look at other peoples success. In this next small section, I am going to randomly pick out a couple of authors that consistently write articles and measure out their “visible” level of success.

-=-

Halstatt Pires (www.marketingtitan.com): We consistently see this author write articles and submit them to us. Halstatt is a good writer who talks about a wide range of topics including web design & SEO.

If we take a look in Google/Yahoo/MSN to see how many times we can find “Halsatt Pires”, the numbers would look like this…

There are over 45,300 web pages listed within Google with the name “Halsatt Pires”.
There are over 18,500 pages listing in Yahoo
There are over 7,500 pages listed in MSN

Wouldn’t you like to have over 71,300 pages online with your name on them? I certainly would. Even if your articles get read a 10% of the time every day or every month for that matter, it would mean on average over 6,200 people could possibly read your articles every single day.

MarketingTitan.com has an alexa.com ranking of: 171,746 best ranked website out of millions of other websites.

-=-

Let’s now take a look at another author.. (all random)

-=-

Joy H Gendusa (www.postcardmania.com) Writes a great deal about postcard campaigns, direct mail campaigns and is quite good at it as well.

If we take a look in Google/Yahoo/MSN to see how many times we can find “Joy H Gendusa”, the numbers would look like this…

There are over 13,800 web pages listed within Google with the name “Joy Gendusa”.
There are over 24,000 pages listing in Yahoo
There are over 4,800 pages listed in MSN

In only 3 search engines, “Joy Gendusa” is found 42,600 times!

PostcardMania.com has an alexa.com ranking of: 76,065 best ranked website out of millions of other websites.

-=-

Again, it begs the questions, wouldn’t you like it if that was your name at the bottom of those articles with your website right beside it?

You DO NOT have to be a professional writer to start writing. In fact, when I started writing, my grammar was so bad, people would actually call me to guide me through my articles and point out the mistakes within them. The point is, people still called. Now thanks to my editors, my writing skills are improving a great deal.

Don’t be shy. Just start somewhere and don’t stop. Before you know it, you’ll be writing 2-5 articles a week and won’t be able to stop. That is when the true power of your promotion will start kicking in.

Just for people who want to know…

Let’s take a look at my success as a writer. If you were to search for my name within quotations like so “Martin Lemieux”, here are the results you would find. (In quotes to narrow down to an exact match)

There are over 65,600 web pages listed within Google with the name “Martin Lemieux”.
There are over 32,300 pages listing in Yahoo
There are over 17,600 pages listed in MSN

That is over 115,500 “registered pages” online that have my name on them. Just remember as well, I haven’t submitted an article in over 2 months due to illness. Only a fraction of those aren’t me, they are someone else. Again, I ask the question… Wouldn’t it be nice if that was your name and your website was right beside those tens of thousands of pages?

Just for curiosity, if you do a search for Martin Lemieux without the quotes within Google, you will get around 1,040,000 pages found. When I started out, those search results weren’t even close to that, maybe even 10% of 1,040,000 because of “Claude Lemieux” & “Mario Lemieux” two famous hockey players.

Does something like this happen over night? Absolutely not. In the last 4 years, I’ve been able to write around 70-80 articles in total! That’s it. There are writers out there that have personally written over 1000 articles in a matter of years.

What else can you do to increase your popularity? Accept articles from other authors of course! Why not share your success with others. Doing so will only increase your credibility online and increase your visitors a great deal. Not only will authors talk about you, your website will increase every time you list another authors article.

Why do you think that many of the article directories world wide get the most traffic on average beyond the Gorillas like Google, Yahoo, Ebay, etc? They all have one thing in common, they’re creating a community of people writing their hearts out and exposing their business further online.

In Conclusion:

If you’ve ever doubted why people write articles, think again. The internet favors the bold, the ones who are not afraid to speak their mind and put their thoughts in digital format get rewarded. More and more authors who have written actual books are now writing for the internet to get more sales for their books. It’s a proven fact that unique content is king and so are your thoughts.

How To Navigate the Bewildering Array of Internet Cruise Deals

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Why do people love cruises? Why do so many cruise vacationers swear they wouldn’t go back to hotel vacations? Cruise travel represents a pinnacle of luxury. You travel around the world, or your chosen area, in cosseted pleasure.

Every whim gets catered for. Every time you’re hungry, food awaits. You go ashore to sightsee a new place, but return to your own bed every night. A floating hotel, travelling to a new location every day.

But how do you choose your cruise deal? How do you know what’s good or bad? Firstly, let’s look at the different types of cruises.

* Size

Ships range from city size (’000s of people) right down to small sailing vessels holding less than 10 people.

* Location

Your choice of ship might depend on location. If you’re cruising the Caribbean, you could try a sailing ship. If you want a world tour, you probably should go for something bigger?

Some of the newer ships from the major cruise operators allow you to cruise the world in luxury. Their high-tech stabilizers mean your wine barely ripples, even in rough seas.

So for smaller cruises in benign weather e.g Caribbean or Med, you can choose large or small. For longer cruises, such as an Atlantic crossing, Arctic visit etc., you need a big ship.

* Price

Prices vary dramatically. Only a few years ago, cruises were an expensive luxury. Now prices fall within any vacation budget. In fact, all inclusive special cruise deals can be much cheaper than land-based vacations. For less than a 5* hotel, you can get 7-days all inclusive in a luxury location.

* Internet

How do you find these great deals ? As always, use the Internet. Sure, call your local travel agent, or respond to newspaper ads, but you’ll find the best deals online.

There’s only a limited number of cruise ships. So you’ll find exactly the same cabin standard, exactly the same food deal, for widely varying prices.

Try to narrow down your preferred location before starting. How long do you want to go for? Then start searching the web. Try ‘cheap cruises deals’ for a search term, and see what comes up. Immediately, you’ll be faced with a bewildering array of choices.

Click on a few of these search results sites. Read some advice and info. Get an idea of prices to your preferred location.

When you’ve seen some deals you like. When you’ve seen at least three different deals to your preferred location. When you’re tempted to book right there & then. Stop!

Before you book, you must seperate the wheat from the chaff. That bewildering array’s about to become clear. Put the cruise company name into your search engine. Put the destination into the search engine. You’re looking for reviews. You’re looking for feedback from other people who’ve been with that cruise company. You’re looking for reviews about your destination.

Do this for each of your cruise vacation shortlist. Check there’s no hidden catches. Check price fully includes everything, and you won’t be stung for lots of onboard extras.

Follow these simple guidelines, and you’ll soon be embarking on the cruise of your dreams.

The ‘Quick & Easy’ Money Makers!

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

There’s a popular myth floating around implying that your product has to be hundreds of pages long if it is to make you any real money.

That’s a big lie.

More money is being made out there than ever before, by individuals selling short, focused reports! And it’s growing at incredible rates.

The classic example that always comes to mind is Internet Cash Machines by Allen Says. That book was released some time ago, yet it’s still selling by the thousands to this day! Other great examples are Magic Letters (which really started it all) and 7 Secrets to Unlimited Traffic. That last one is no more than 15 pages long! Yet, it’s still being downloaded from thousands of sites.

The bottom line is…when it comes to info-products, size doesn’t necessarily matter! Quality does! You could make just as much money with a 15-page book as you could with a 100-page one. In fact, you can make more with the former. I’ll show you how shortly.

Profit potential aside, there are many other great reasons to create these little ebooks…

They are very easy to put together; it doesn’t require much work.
They can be completed within a few weeks, a few days, and sometimes even a few hours!
They are really not that difficult or time consuming to market.
They are especially great for new marketers (with little or no experience) and are also easy profit generators for seasoned marketers. And…
Most importantly, they allow you to spread your risk.
You see, it all boils down to time and money i.e. time management and positive cash flow.

Time is a very precious commodity, especially if you still have a 9 to 5 job to deal with. And, we already know that all of our projects will not be home runs. In fact, there’s a good chance that a few of them will be complete flops. That’s the reality most of us have to deal with.

So, if you invest a lot of time and energy into creating a monster ebook that turns out to be a dud, you would have lost all the time and energy you put into that project, with nothing to show for it.

On the other hand, if you had spent only a couple of weeks to create a much shorter ebook which also turned out to be a dud, you could quickly pull that one out and replace it with another short one. Your risks are dramatically reduced and your chances of putting out a winner is increased!

It’s better to create 10 little ebooks per year and have 2 of them flop (which means 8 of them are bringing in the cash!) than to only create one or two big ebooks in that same year and risk having them both flop. There is also a much better chance that 1 of your products will be a hot seller if you have 10 of them out there, instead of just one or two.

Now, let’s look at profit potential…

If each one of these 8 books bring in $1000 per month for you, the profits can add up quickly. If your goal is to pull in $100,000 in the coming year, you have a much better chance of getting there with 8 to 10 small ebooks bringing in $1000 per month each, instead of relying on just one big ebook alone to pull in the entire $100,000.

And…even if you pull in just a few hundred per month from each of the 8 books, that’s still a heck of a lot better than what most people are making online.

Here are a few more ways you can ensure that you profit from these short ebooks, well into the future…

You can offer each one as a backend (followup) product for the other.
You can bundle them up later and sell them as a brand new package, with a different price tag.

You can use some of them (especially if they don’t sell too well on their own) as bonuses for your other products, to increase the perceived value of the ‘package.’

You can also use some of them purely as list builders. (Give them away for free, swap them with other marketers, or whatever. The fact that it only took you a week or two to create them offers you a lot more options and flexibility.)

And, if you’re still passionate about creating that monster ebook, why not break it up into smaller projects and start selling each one as they get completed?

For example, if you want to create the “complete” ‘online marketing’ guide, you could start by creating a small ebook on just ’sales copy writing’ and start selling it. Then, create another on ‘product development’ and get that one out as well. And so on…

In the end, you can bundle them up together, or combine them into one mega book and sell it. Your time is much better spent that way. And…you also have some cash coming in while you work on your projects.

Many of us continue to chase after that one million dollar idea and miss many of the smaller $100,000 projects along the way.

These smaller products are much easier to create, are much easier to roll out, don’t require a large investment of your time, energy or money, and they greatly reduce your risks.

They are also probably the fastest way to get your name out there and build credibility for yourself and your business. You can really do some serious damage with these mini ebooks, as long as you provide valuable information in them.

Here’s to your next successful “Mini E”… book, that is. ;-)

Cut Down on the CO2 Emissions of your Travel by Going by Train

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

Trains are something that the UK population think as very easy and very quick to go on, there’s no issues checking in, standing around to acquire your holdalls and going through complicated security checkpoints when you are trying to get to Lyon. It is simply wonderful. You just go to the rail station, discover your platform and then you’re off in a green mode of transport.

Trains are reasonably environmentally friendly forms of general public transport. This is because public transport might well transport enormous volumes of travellers at any one time. By travelling so many passangers compared to the large number of cars it would take to transport them all, the carbon emissions is decidedly less overall. Trains are astonishing compared to automobiles.

It is forever going to be necessary to get from one place to another by whichever means are likely and if this means picking public transport since it has a smaller carbon footprint than an aeroplane, then this is a green choice to pick, some may say its a brilliant choice. So it is potential to enjoy a holiday by rail and continue to be be co2 friendly. These days it is attainable to go by train to the majority of cities in Europe including Spain. Combat climate change with European Rail Travel.

So if you yourself want to keep your co2 footprint to a minimum, there is no contest, going by train is super compared to by car. Travelling by train is a pretty energy efficient sort of transport, and it is very straightforward to stay safe on public transport if rail travellers use common sense. The next time you want to get away somewhere, see if you yourself will use a train or another kind of public transport to cut down on emissions. Some research has found that flying between Glasgow, Paris and Austria creates over twelve times more fuel emissions than going by public transportation, surely this is reason enough to go by public transport, when rail travellers are able to.

Using the train for sightseeing trips is a magnificent way to decrease your carbon emissions, and rail travellers may want to bring that same smart thinking towards your morning and evening commute to the office. Although going by public transport has become more fashionable in the last 3 years, there is however a massive sample of commuters that take their car to their work establishment.

19 Timeless Tips to Keep Meetings Short

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Copyright 2006 Deborah Torres Patel

Thorough meeting preparation alleviates anxiety. Good planning guarantees that meetings are relevant, don’t overrun and aren’t held back by uniformed, boring or disinterested attendees. Follow these 19 timeless tips to keep your meetings on track and on time.

When preparing your agenda …

1. Identify the aim of your meeting

2. Put the most important items first

3. Establish a clear outcome for each point

4. Judiciously choose meeting invitees. Ask yourself, “Who should attend?” “Should attendees be present for all or just part of the meeting?”

5. Place controversial points towards the end so the early part of the meeting can flow smoothly

6. If you work for a large organization and not everyone knows each other there may be a need for very short introductions. Schedule time for people to quickly share, “Who I am, my role in the company and why I’m here.”

Distribute a specific agenda at least one week before the meeting. Make sure that everyone attending has all the information they need and that presenters know exactly how much time they are allotted.

When circulating the agenda, state that the meeting will start sharp and end on time. This will subtly set the tone for an efficient meeting. Obviously, it is critical that the meeting chair sticks to the timeline.

The meeting day…

1. Rehearse your presentation (if applicable)

2. Arrive early

3. Double check equipment

4. Serve coffee, tea, water or refreshments before a 30-60 minute meeting. Any meeting longer than 30 minutes should have drinks available throughout.

5. If it’s an important meeting, bring a colleague with you to take notes so you can concentrate on the meeting. A discreet alternative is to record the meeting if there are no objections from attendees.

6. Avoid giving all handouts at the beginning because people often leaf through the paperwork instead of being attentive.

Unfortunately, well-planned meetings can be derailed by meeting participants. If you have an assertive meeting chair, s/he can easily get the meeting back on track. However, anyone can step in if they have confidence or organizational clout.

7. An upright and open posture is commanding. You can change the volume, pitch, speed or tone of your voice to keep people’s interest and engage them by simply leaning forward.

8. Monitoring other people’s body language can keep you on top of the meeting. Involve slouching or disinterested people by asking for their opinions.

9. When it is your turn to present, remind others that your aim is to keep the meeting as short as possible. Your intention can motivate others to do the same.

10. If speakers are long-winded or have a personal agenda, you can take control assuming a moderator’s role with a few well-placed interruptions like, “May we address the next item on our agenda?” or “Would it be possible for us to go over the details later? Or “Can we discuss the specifics offline?”

11. Suggest a short toilet break to stretch if the meeting is dragging.

12. If an argument or unresolved item prolongs a meeting, call the formal part of the meeting to an end and organize a separate meeting to address the issue.

13. Before ending the meeting, solidify specific task ownership and action items.

To ensure your valuable time isn’t usurped by an endless meeting, communicate in advance that you are only available for the scheduled meeting time and politely excuse yourself if the meeting runs overtime. It is your right to leave.

Start and end your own meetings on time and develop a reputation for short, well-organized gatherings. Your colleagues will respect you and contribute much more when they feel you value their time.

Deciding on a Broadband Supplier for Home Use

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

Choosing the right broadband package can be a difficult proposition, with so many access companies on the market today and an infinite number of tariffs. Although it may initially look like a daunting task, actually choosing the right deal for you is not that difficult if you consider some of the following points.

If you are resident in the UK, the first thing you should consider if you are not a BT customer, is whether the supplier you intend to use can actually provide you with a broadband service. Many suppliers can only provide the service if you have a BT line. If a cable company supplies your phone line your choice of supplier is greatly diminished, but there are still several companies out there for you to consider. Once this has been established you can now dive into the market and search the vast array of offers and deals that are available.

Most internet suppliers generally offer 3 types of packages, the cost of each package increases as the amount you can download per month increases. The basic package usually starts by offering a 2mb connection allowing you to download 2Gb of information per month for around £17.99 a month; this is normally enough to service the needs of the average family and many suppliers are now offering unlimited download time. Packages then increase in price as the amount of information you can download increases and as the package becomes more advanced, the more is offered to you, therefore, it is important to choose the right package for your specific needs.

Broadband suppliers are currently offering deals that include: 3 months usage at a reduced rate, free anti virus and firewall protection, up to 500 minutes free home phone usage per month, free access to music download sites for 1 month, £150.00 off a new laptop computer and much more. The more you spend within a given package the more you are offered. It is well worth searching through the various companies to see exactly what is available.

Broadband can also be accessed using wireless technology. This enables you to connect to the Internet through an enabled device such as a laptop or mobile phone from anywhere in your home. With wireless technology a receiver outside of the premises sends the signals through to connection points inside. These connection points then send data through to the computer.

If you are travelling and need to pick up important documents via email, you can access the Internet through a wireless connection at large number of public hotspots. A hotspot is an access point that is available in cafes, hotels airports etc. They broadcast a standard wireless frequency up to approx 100 metres, enabling a connection to be made to the Internet through your equipment. Most of the major broadband suppliers now offer a wireless broadband option.

Some broadband access suppliers now offer a facility where you can use your broadband connection as an extra telephone line. By using your existing broadband connection it is possible to route calls via a telephone exchange to the number dialled. Effectively this technology gives you the benefits of having an additional phone line without the need to have a new line installed. Using a telephone adaptor appropriate to your broadband connection and a standard handset you can make calls without the need for microphones and earphones. It is possible to call local, national and internationally and also to mobiles; the cost is reasonable and can be covered either per minute or by a one off monthly payment.

The market to supply broadband is very competitive and this can only be a good thing for the consumer. As companies offer more and more within their packages, a little research of the market will ensure that you get a good deal when you sign up to the services and you will find the package that is right for you.

Norbert Wartle writes on consumer issues for Cheapest Utility Suppliers.
